In the near future, a new technology has been developed that allows cancer to be cured by replacing all the cells in someone’s body with nanites, which also makes the patient immortal. However, the technology is not yet perfect and after a while the flaws reveal themselves. In this novel, spanning over centuries and continents, we read the stories of the patients that underwent the treatment, and of those who came after them.

Toward Eternity combines the action of the best sci-fi with deep reflections on the role of art in all its different levels. Every sentence of this story makes it clear that Hur writes with deep, true love for language and he skilfully explores the connection between memory, art and humanity. Looking at how the self and the body participate in this process, this expansive novel is, nevertheless, propulsive in the way that it reads, as both the plot and the prose are exquisite.

What is clear by the end of the book is that humanity deepens when we look at language as something that is beyond a tool for communication. All we are is stories.
